Crash Cart Supplies List - What Should Medical Emergency Crash Cart Contents Be?

!±8± Crash Cart Supplies List - What Should Medical Emergency Crash Cart Contents Be?

Medical crash cart is an important piece of equipment in every medical center or hospital. It is designed to always be on the ready for the situations that require quick action, such as restore consciousness, or to restore living signs in patients. Examples of such situations will be a heart arrest, breathing cessation, or drug overdose.

To be quickly accessible, emergency carts are always positioned near emergency rooms (ER), operating rooms, intensive care units (ICU), or recovery rooms.

Emergency carts always feature at least five sturdy drawers for medications, suction devices, scalpels, needles, air supply tubes, a working surface with heart monitors and AEDs, or automatic electronic defibrillators, as well as space where oxygen containers are securely attached.

Nurses and doctors that are first in line to provide life support and resuscitation, need to always be clearly aware of the placement of the medical emergency cart as well as of its contents and their use, down to the contents of each individual drawer.

We will provide here a quick checklist of crash cart supplies. The list is intended as an overview only, it is not complete, and can be different in different hospitals or ERs. If you are studying for an ACLU exam or similar, you should look into the literature given to you for more details on basic life support, and details of conditions that require quick recognition of the need to use an emergency cart and the resuscitation procedures.

Top surface of the hospital emergency cart: This is commonly reserved for the heart monitoring device and AED, automatic electronic defibrillator, to be used in heart arrest situations.

Crash cart medication list for adults includes: Adenosine, Amiodarone, Atropine, Calcium Chloride, Dextrose, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Epinephrine, Etomidate, Flumazenil, Lidocaine, Magnesium Sulfate, Naloxone, Nitroglycerin, Norepinephrine, Procainamide, Vasopressin, Verapamil, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Chloride. (Note: emergency cart drugs for children should be different, see below.)

Breathing equipment and air supplies: Tracheal (windpipe) tubes such as endotracheal tubes, tracheostomy tubes, nasal tube or nasal cannula, oxygen flow meter, laryngoscope (throat viewer) supplies such as light bulbs, batteries, exam gloves, and suction devices such as suction cathethers.

Intra venous (IV) equipment supplies: Blood tubes, sterile water vials, alcohol swabs, tape, IV start kits, syringes, arterial blood gas (ABG) kits and syringes, IV solutions such as lactated ringers, normal saline, and IV tubes like macrodrip, extension tubing.

Heart and chest procedures: In addition to the heart monitor and AED machine that are normally positioned on top of the medical emergency cart, one of the drawers will include cardiac (heart) and chest procedure supplies, such as ECG electrodes, sterile gloves, face masks and face shields, large dressings, cardiac needle, betadine solution, chest tubes.

Specialty items in the medical crash cart: Cutdown tray, CVP catheter tray, suture.

Warning: Due to the strength of the above medications and resuscitation equipment, the contents of a pediatric crash cart should be much different.

It is important for nursing and medical students to understand the use of emergency crash cart and other life saving supplies and devices. It is also important that all of these devices be stored in a secured, always ready medical crash cart. To be effective, hospital must prepare a comprehensive crash cart policy that includes crash cart medication list, complete crash cart inventory checklist and the appropriate staff training procedures.

The Role of Rhythm Strips for Interpreting EKGs

!±8± The Role of Rhythm Strips for Interpreting EKGs

Each time the heart beats it emits electrical currents. An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a method in which electrodes are attached at various points on the body. These electrodes are attached to wires that are attached to the EKG machine. The electrodes send waves and impulses to the machine that amplifies the results on a monitor and prints them onto graph paper. Heart rates and palpitations are commonly diagnosed from the EKG results.

Heart rhythm can help to detect medical problems. Arrhythmia, heart valve disease, coronary artery disease and impending heart attacks can be determined by interpreting EKG rhythms. If an abnormality is detected, the technician or physician may request a follow-up EKG or other additional testing. Since some abnormalities may be caused by external or non-problematic internal factors, the EKG rhythm is not always the end-all to cardiovascular testing.

The technician will begin the EKG by placing 10 to 12 electrodes at various points on your body. The electrodes are placed from your lower breastbone to areas near the armpits. Other pads will be placed on each of your arms and legs. The electrodes are attached to wires, called leads, which are attached to the EKG machine.

The use of EKG rhythm strips is an additional way for interpreting results. Although the rhythm strip is only one point-of-view, it is often a more precise way to detect problems. Rhythm strips are particularly useful in patients who have reported very slow or very rapid heartbeats. Most EKGs take only 10 minutes or so to complete, however, when an EKG rhythm strip is used, the visit may be prolonged. EKG rhythm strips are generally used when the normal EKG does not produce desired results. The EKG strip can be used to measure your heart's patterns for a full minute or even longer.

For new students learning about the EKG process and EKG rhythms, the information can be overwhelming. Most schools do not spend an enormous amount of time covering the topics of rhythms but hospitals do require specialized classes in this area. An EKG technician will begin by understanding some basic rhythms and what is considered normal. As he or she gains experience and takes specialized courses, he or she will gain expertise in interpreting EKG rhythms and reading rhythm strips. An inexperienced technician will be unlikely to disclose the results of your EKG. Your cardiovascular specialist will look at and interpret your results and inform you as to whether or not your condition needs further evaluation.

    ECG Rhythms

    !±8± ECG Rhythms

ECG is an abbreviation for an electrocardiograph. An ECG records the heart's electrical activity as a graph or a series of wavy lines on a moving strip of paper. It provides information on a patient's heart rate and rhythm and blood flow. It is used to diagnose medical problems such as a heart attack or irregular heartbeats.

Heart rhythm problems or arrhythmias can be diagnosed using a variety of methods. The method depends upon the specific heart rhythm problem suspected by a physician. An electro physiology is done when the arrhythmia is identified as a fast heart rhythm problem called tachyarrhythmia.

There are different types of ECG tests that help record the heart's rhythm of patients. The exercise ECG or stress test is a graphical recording of the heart's rhythm during exertion. The exertion is created using a treadmill machine. This test helps to evaluate whether exercise can create an arrhythmia or make it worse. It also helps diagnose a condition involving insufficient flow of blood to the heart called ischemia.

An ECG rhythm is recorded for long and short periods of time. A Holter monitor is a 24-72 hour ECG. It is a device that measures and records the heart rhythm over 1-3 days. This test may be done when an ECG does not clearly show the arrhythmia, though it is suspected to be the underlying cause of the symptoms. In a ECG Rhythm test, patches with wires are placed on the patient's chest. The wires are connected to a portable monitor that can be attached to a purse or belt.

An external loop recorder is a device that monitors the heart rhythm and rate for up to one month. During this test, the patient wears a device on the wrist or around the waist. When symptoms are experienced, the patient presses a button on the device to make a recording of the heart activity that just occurred.

An insertable loop recorder is a device that continuously monitors the heart rhythm for up to 14 months. This small device is placed under the skin during a twenty-minute procedure using a local anesthetic. When a symptom is experienced, the patient places a hand-held activator over the recorder. Later, a physician analyzes the stored information. ECG rhythms help diagnose problems that can be cured when detected. It is just one of many applications of an ECG that has a life saving impact.
